Big love to you on this new year, new day and new era. Allthough our government wants to be able to indefinitely detain us we know that the people's spirit is strong and we will push on and continue to fight the good fight! 2011 was a year of pushing thru some tough times as the world made many changes. We always kept the music and good vibes flowing and we look forward to continuing that path in this here new year! Thank you so much to all who came out to Elbo Room last Thursday night for what was a bangin' way to end a bangin' year. Thank you guys for all of your support thru the years!!!

This Thursday we kick off the new year with Afrolicious back at the Elbo Room featuring resident DJ Pleasuremaker and guest DJ Tom Thump. Tom Thump has reached legendary status in the SF music scene for his ecclectic style, his amazing skills, and his continued success across 25 plus years DJing in this sometimes difficult or fickle city, musically speaking. The resident percussionist will be on hand as usual.

Saturday night you can find the Afrolicious sound returning to Public Works to play on that legendary Function One soundsytem of theirs. We always have a great time at Public Works and would be great to kick off the New Year in serious style at Public Works, for those who are unable to make it Thursday night.

Also next week the Afrolicious band gets the year started. Sunday night the band plays a private holiday party in the Mission. Monday January 9th Afrolicious live band and DJ Pleasuremaker will bring the heat to the Escatic Dance SF party in the East Bay. Tuesday Pleasuremaker flies to New York to support the Novalima show in NYC w- Rob Garza and Nickodemus. Tuesday Jan 11th thru Friday Jan 13th DJ Pleasuremaker will be holding it down at the world famous 9:30 Club in Washington D.C. playing sets between Thievery Corporation and Novalima. The 3 shows are all sold out, but for those in the area you can catch Pleasuremaker spinning with his main man Nappy G.on percussion (Turntables on the @ Eighteenth Street Lounge on Friday night, January 13th for the officail Theivery Corporaton after party. Saturday Jan. 14th Pleasure returns to Nueva York to make a return appearance at the legendary Bembe Lounge in Williamsburg Brooklyn.

Sunday night, Jan 15th Afrolicious full band will be playing live at Cafe Du Nord as part of the Soul Bingo music series.

As you can tell this will be a crazy busy week for Pleasuremaker. As for Afrolicious at the Elbo Room goes, we will have a nice line up of very talented guests alongside our resident percussionists. We have the Afrolicious debut of Boca Beats, a side project of the amazing Brazilian Band Boca Do Rio. They will bring an electro-Bossa blend. Please get there early to catch there set. Also in the mix is good friend and incredible DJ, Kiko De Gallo (Spain, NYC,) and local favorite and long time Afrolicious contributor, J.Boogie.

Greetings soulful music lovers!

Last week we gave thanks to the music gods and got down like we always do, with soul, passion, energy, and life! So blessed to keep this musical path with you. We had a great time down in Los Angeles at the Mint playing with our homies Orgone. We got such a great crowd response and had a blast! Also last Saturday night we broke in Monarch, a brand new club down on 6th and Mission. They have a great sound system and a great vibe inside the club.

This week we are so fired up to bring you the cast of Fela! who will be bringing their version of Fela's classic material in a live band setting that has been winning over audiences around the world since it debuted in NYC a couple years back. This will be a legendary Afrolicious and you may want to get there early as it may be a sell out.

Friday we return to the beloved Big Apple, New York! We get down with our main man Nickodemus and DJ DRM @ the legendary Cielo club in the Meatpacking district. This is part of the Turntables on the Hudson monthly party series. Honored to make our debut at Cielo and re-unite with some of the funkiest cats in NY!. Saturday night we join our brother DJ Concerned at his weekly party in Manhattan at the Sunburnt Calf. Sunday we head down to Washington D.C. to make our third appearance at the timeless Eighteenth Street Lounge in Washington D.C.

Stay tuned for an Afrolicious set at Public Works holiday party on Saturday December 10th. Also we are thrilled to bring the Afrolicious full band to the Independent to support Sambada and their tasty blend of Afro-Brazilian, Funk, Reggae, Samba. These guys are great and we are so looking forward to an amazing show.

Also December 30th we are stoked to be a part of the Sno Globe festival out at Lake Tahoe. This festival features such acts as Bassnectar, Thievery Corporation, Pretty Lights, and Afrolicious!

Last week was yet another amazing week in music. Afrolicious was slamming yet again with a great set from guest DJ Barney Iller from NYC and always tasty percussion from our resident drummers. We closed out our 6 month residency @ Boom Boom Room known as the Pleasuresessions with an incredible and soulful last night there.
Friday we returned to Public Works to close out the night following DJ Nu-Mark of Jurrasic 5 fame. Was yet another fun and dance fueled night of musica!

This week Afrolicious welcomes the top notch producer and homey Captain Planet, he just dropped a full length album on Bastard Jazz records, come early we got some freebies for you plus we got DJ Chorizo Funk from Austin in the house. Friday night we have been honored with holding down DJ duties at the New Parish after party for the Thievery Corporation show in Oakland.
Saturday we leave bright and early on a plane for Austin Texas to arrive during Austin City Limits madness. We are going to DJ the Night Fever party @ Hotel Vegas till 2 am after which point we head over to the Silent Disco to joint the dopest Austin DJ's alongside some of SF heavy hitters for an all night silent throw down!

Next week Pleasuremaker band plays live Monday night at the Make Out Room,, and Friday and Saturday night Pleasuremaker Band and Afrolicious play respectively at the Guitarfish festival. Another amazing week of music yet again!

Afrolicious release "A Dub For Mali" on ESL Music

Afrolicious is pleased to announce our debut release today on ESL Music. This release is truly a long time in the making even though we only recently decided to put out original music under the name Afrolicious. This 3 song EP features some of the amazingly talented folks who have helped make Afrolicious the eclectic and off the hook weekly party it has become. On "Thursday Night Kinda Swing" we have guests Baba Duru on percussion and scat vocals and Aaron Lebowitz on Saxophone and horn arrangements. "A Dub For Mali" features the fabulous Ngoni work and vocals of Yacouba Diara from Burinka Faso and Mali,and flute by Izzy * Wise and "Foolin" features the talented vocals and lyrics of Fresh is Life from Trinidad and the horn playing of Will Magid and Aaron Lebowitz. All guitars, bass and keys were layed down by Pleasuremaker and the arrangements were split w- Pleasure and Rob Garza who completed the circle with holding down the production end. Señor Oz was up in the mix during the sessions bringing the vibes together and documenting some of the sessions. Big up to Lexx Valdez for the dope album art design and the good folks @ ESL Music for putting this out.

Afrolicious had an amazing opportunity to remix Thievery Corporation's "Vampires." You can get that along with the brand new EP over @ ESL Music's website.

Afrolicious has had the pleasure of playing many great events and places lately. Just this last weekend Pleasuremaker went and opened for Thievery Corporation out at Redrocks and Señor Oz went up to Arcada w- the crew, Fresh is Life, Diamomd, Qique and tore it up! Public Works last weekend for the ESL Music showcase was amazing. The weekly party has been off the hook @ Elbo Room with some special guests including Ursula 1000, The Funk Ark, Lucky Brown and the Vibrometers and this coming week we are featuring the very talented Danny Massure and the Afrolicious live band!

Welcome back to the blog. It has been crazy busy and crazy good times lately. So much to recount it's gonna have to be para phrased a bit. In June and July so far we have had such wonderful guests as Dusu Mali Band. DJ Soo, the talented Mariella from New York, also from NY DJ Concerned, the FEX crew from Chciago, and Stronghold Sound feat. Wonatanara Revolution. The next two weeks feature some groove heavy live bands, each bringing their own version of funk and afro-beat. Next week will be The Vibrometers from LA. making their Afrolicious debut. The following week we will have Waswhington D.C.'s Funk Ark who are on ESL Music. In fact August will be an East Coast take over of Afrolicious with Ursula 1000, (NYC, ESL Music) Thursday August 11th and Rex Riddim from Nappy Riddem out of D.C. as well on August 25th. Very excited to have all these great guests.

In July we had an amazing East Coast run. Big shout outs to Ilhan and Pinar at Nublu and all the amazing musicians on board for that gig, Wendell Rand, Billy Magic, Jojo Koa, Andy Averbuch, Duke Mushroom. Much love to our East Coast family, DJ Concerned, Chauncey Yearwood, Andy Barlow for hosting us. Much love to Sound Liberation Front for hosting us at that killer roof top BBQ in Crown Heights Brooklyn, truly an unforgettable party! Love to Bembe and our amazing crew of friends who showed up and got in the mix with us especially Fresh Nunas who dropped a killer set of Afro heaters! Shouts to Dan from Dub Spot, Kiva and Sunru for the studio session. DJ DRM, and Amon, the list could go on and on for quite some time. We also had a blast out at Martha's Vineyard, thanks Diana! And finally we had a killer night in D.C. at the legendary Eighteenth Street Lounge. Thanks to Farid and the ESL family! Also shout to Eric Hilton for the night of drinks and music on our last night out East!

It is also with great joy that we announce ESL SF showcase #2 at Public Works celebrating the release of Turntables on the Hudson vole 8 Refelcting Cielo. Our main man Nickodemus made yet another dope musical compilation and this time we are very honored as he included an Afrolicious track on this one! The event will feature Rob Garza as well as Nickodemus, Afrolicious with live drums, and in the upstairs room we will have Dub Mission meets Surya Dub featuring DJ Sep and Kush Arora. Afrolicious keeps pushing, Pleasuresessions, and Public Works

May was another amazing month of music, friends, good times, and soulful vibrations.
We had a wonderful line up of guest DJ's, Bands, and musicians. Roger Mas and Kool Kyle from El Superritmo, Black Mahal, DJ Hiromi, DJ DRM, and Fausto Sousa, plus musicians, singers and drummers, Qique, Matute, Diamond, Sergio, Fresh is Life, Billy Magic, Iggy Mon, Baba Duru.

Afrolicious keeps taking this soulful energy from the incredible crowds each week and continues to bring the good vibes. This Thursday night we feature some African blues, rock, reggae featuring the nephew of Ali Farka Toure and his band Dusu Mali Band all the way from Portland Oregon.

This Saturday we bring the Afrolicious sound back to Public Works for a marathon 4 plus hour set of Afrolicious, plus guests DJ's Whooligan, and Wonway. Gonna be a scorcher as we hit that Function One sound system hard and feature the high energy of our live drummers.

Also the Wednesday night weekly live music event at the Boom Boom Room has been a blast and a great chance to experiment with the live band set up more. If you have yet to make it we highly recommend giving it a chance some Wednesday night.

The 4 year anniversary party was completely off the hook. Thanks to the amazing cast of musicians and DJ's and of course the crowd for bringing such a heavy energy to the spot! We really felt the love those two nights and will be sharing some recordings from the shows, coming very soon! In the meantime just wanted to share some photos and say thanks to all the performers who helped make this happen in no particular order.

Afrolicious turns 4 years old, and it's getting better all the time!

So much music, so much joy! We have been damn blessed with too many good times to count!!
Like to give a huge shout out to all the amazing guests and events that have been going down lately.

Back on April 1st we had an ESL showcase event that was a crazy fun party at Public Works with our friends Rob Garza (Thievery Corporation), Ancient Astronauts, J.Boogie and our drummers Qique, Diamond, and B.Lee. It was seriously an epic night. Thanks to everyone who came out to support. Last week we had Bachaco from Miami Florida, Oz and the drummers made some folks dance in Oakland at the Together party, and the Pleasure Sessions was a blast at Boom Boom Room on Wednesday.

This week we get back to residents night at Afrolicious. For those of you who have been on one of these nights, you know we don't stop, we just keep the party rolling strong for over 4 hours straight!

We also are gearing up to the end of this month when we celebrate 4 years of Afrolicious every Thursday night at the Elbo Room. It is all thanks to you who love music, dancing, friends, and good times, that have allowed this party to exist and push on week after week. In a city where the night life is a slippery slope and musical fads come and go, we keep the music and dancefloor burning up, and it's all out of love baby! For the 4 year we feature DJ's Smash, Jeremy Sole, and Nappy G. (who will also joint the fun on percussion!.) Thursday is DJ Smash and Nappy G. Friday is Jeremy Sole, and both nights we will bring out the Afrolicious live ensemble complete with horn section, and guests vocalists who have contributed to our upcoming debut release.

Also, Wednesday night we flip the Afrolicious vibe into a live band an original music flavor for the Pleasure Sessions at the Boom Boom Room. A combination of original Pleasuremaker, Billy Magic, & Afrolicious material, plus some rare re-makes done inna Pleasure stylee. This night has been a lot of fun and just a new scene to check out.

Yes yes ya'll! It has been a minute since we updated here. Let's just say we have been having a damn good time of it.

I would like to do a quick re-cap since we last joined you. Since our last post with the mighty Kush Arora, we have featured such amazing DJ's and Bands as DJ Greg Caz (NYC, BRazilian Beats Brooklyn) AfroMassive (Humboltd, Oakland, Albino!) DJ Honeyknuckles (SF, Sanguin Soul) DJ DR. Musco, Makru, and the Afrofunk Experience.
Oz and Pleasure have had the pleasure of traveling to Austin, from which Oz just got back after a string of gigs. Pleasure came back early to hold down the new Wednesday night Pleasuresessions at the Boom Boom Room which has been going really great and features members of Afrolicious, Solomon Burke, Afrofunk Experience, Bassment, and Locura.

This week at Afrolicious we feature residents night, in which Pleasure and Ozgood will take you on a sonic journey around the world. As there is no guest band or DJ the fellas will be in control for over 4 hours of heavy funky vibrations coming at you through loud speakers in the always inviting Elbo Room. As we approach our 4th year anniversary of getting to do this every week with you all we are feeling very blessed. We also see this party growing and developing each week, and getting better all the time. AMAZING!!! WE still want to be better at documenting this amazing event every week and need some help from our friends. For those with photos and videos, please reach out and let us know you have them. For those interested in helping with this we have free passes for you to our events and other goodies!

Finally we are super excited to return to Public Works on April 1st for the first of a regular series brought to you by ESL Music, the label of Thievery Corporation. This promises to be a great night featuring Rob Garza (Thievery, DJ Set) Ancient Astronauts, Afrolicious (with the live drums) J.Boogie all in the main room. In the Odd Job room will be the Sunset party crew feat. DJ's Solar, Galen, & J-Bird . If you have ever been to one of their out door parties in the summer you know these cats make a great time. Very excited about this!!

Welcome to 2011 where the new decade starts to take flight alongside our dreams! For those who were there 2010 ended in a HUGE way with the last two Thursday night's being off the chain, big up to See-I for all the vibes they brought and ESL Music and Thievery Corporation for the D.C. to SF connection!
For two weeks in December we had a $5 cover to celebrate the holidays take a little load off at the door. Well everyone was happy and so are we. To show appreciation to all of YOU we are keeping the cover @ $5 every week except when certain guests who travel far and wide or very large guest band join us will we raise the cover a dollar or two. Afrolicious is teaming up with our friends ESL Music to close out this most amazing year with a climactic guest appearance from the Roots Reggae, party band See-I.
See-I is based out of Washington D.C. featuring members of Thievery Corporation live band . Their dynamic show has been setting off around the world for years now and we are so fired up to bring get them in the mix at Afrolicious.

This is the debut in a series of events to be held in the next year in collaboration with ESL Music. Keep an eye out for big tings to come!

Last week we had a scorching live performance featuring the Afrolicious crew and Yacouba from Burinka Faso/Mali. Yacouba had been back in Africa for awhile and since his return he is bringing back some burning fire to the Bay. Afrolicious family, we're spreading the love on a brief Texas tour this weekend, if you have friends or family down that way let them know we are returning to Austin to celebrate the release of the new issue of Waxpoetics magazine, featuring War on the cover, who are one of the bands that formed the template for the music we play! We had an epic time last time we were in Austin, one of our favorite parties of all time rocking with DJ Chorizo Funk, Papa Chop, Jeff Strange and all the mad dancers! We will also be making our first trip to Houston on Monday to rock with our good friend DJ Sun, we are looking forward to the Southern Hospitality!

This week we have a longtime keeper of the global sound, DJ Dragonfly. He has been holding it steady in California at many festivals, his own events, and with big-name acts in global-electronica. Dragonfly embodies devotion, passion, and love in his quest for new and fresh sounds as well as the ancient. He is a master of bringing folks together with his 10 year long running Groove Garden and it is with great honor that we invite the man to do his thing at Afrolicious.

We also want to remind you that Afrolicious will be keeping in the tradition of the last 3 years for Thanksgiving and we will be celebrating Thanksgiving inna Afrolicious stylee, (that is to say a very FUNKY Thanksgiving.)

It has been a MIGHTY week in San Francisco, definitely the craziest this town has seen in a long while. We celebrated our ancestors with Dia De Los Muertos, Halloween weekend was a wild one, big up to Ninja Tune for celebrating 20 years and the party @ 1015 Folsom Friday. Big up to Sunset promotions and the Space Cowboys for throwing Ghostship party Saturday and The Triple Crown on Sunday night were off the chain! And of course congratulations to the World Series Champion Giants, they have lit a fire of passion in the good people of SF and the Bay.

This Thursday night November 4th we are pleased and honored to have an incredible talent all the way from Washington D.C. Thomas Blondet. His production work has been in the mix at Afrolicious with such heaters as Havana 2am. Which you can download for free here. As well as his Sunday night residency at the legendary 18th st Lounge in Washington D.C., Thomas has been running a label out of D.C. called Rhythm and Culture for awhile and we are celebrating their most recent release called 'The Sound of Rhythm and Culture'. We got the pleasure of playing with him in D.C. and it is now our turn to get to host him.

Yes yes, things are busy and really solid over here at Afrolicious headquarters. Producing some brand new joints for both Afrolicious and Pleasuremaker. These tracks will be the first original Afrolicious productions and we are very excited to say the least. Look out for an EP and full length Pleasuremaker album to drop in '11.

This Thursday night we feature our good friend and amazing musician/vocalist from Senegal Samba Guise as we celebrate his birthday the best way we know how; throwing down!!! It has been blazing hot at Afrolicious lately and we are looking forward to keeping this going!

For those who have been with us over the last year or more we have been doing promotional giveaways in association with labels and companies that we support. Last week we celebrated a new Fania Records release, big love to you guys! First of all thank you so much for coming out to the 3 year anniversary celebration of Afrolicious everyone, it was so much fun.

It's crazy how much Cumbia is blowin' up these days. I aint gonna say I've been a Cumbia aficionado forever, but I did get turned on to this beautiful music almost ten years ago and it is interesting to see how much it has blown up in the last couple years.

Okay so diggin' thru this great blog, Generation Bass, I found some seriously nasty electro cumbia, just the way I like it. It's got the old school Colombiano flava, plus modern production. That's all I need, I'm sold. I'm looking for more tasteful music like this. The producer is a cat called Gayo Negro, don't know much about him except that his production is killin'!!!

Damn, it is almost hard to believe that Afrolicious has been going so strong every single week for 3 years at the end of this month. Well not that hard, but it is still something to reflect on, (with a grin and an eye to the future.)

To try and think of all the amazing friends we have met along the way, you wonderful dancers that come through and express yourselves and make the party happen, the vast array of deeply talented musicians, mc's, bands, dj's, and vocalists, that have brought their flavor to the stage, and of course all the funky, soulful, beat driven music that gets played week in and week out, it's a bit of a whirlwind to try and take it all in. I can only imagine what it will be like three years from now!

As always been busy with gigs and music production lately, so we have not been back here for a second. Ideally we will keep a more steady flow going on here. Highlights include a trip down to Los Angeles to guest at Afrofunke, a trip to Austin, TX to mix it up with the Wax Poetics, Fania, Dub Spot, and Soul of the Boot folks @ SXSW with good friends, Chico Mann, Ocote Soul Sounds, Obah, J.Boogie, Ancient Astronauts, Chorizo Funk, and more. Incredible act Delhi 2 Dublin made a guest appearance @ Afrolicious, Earthrise Soundsystem, and incredible live musicians J.Elrod, Enrique Padilla, Baba Duru, Will Magid, Iggy Mon, Krown Prince, and more.

With amazing guests and the springtime bubbling up Afrolicious has had some of the busiest and most fun nights of the last three years lately. That says a lot considering how ridiculously fun we have, you have, everyone haves on Thursday nights @ the Elbo Room. And it is this joy that trumps even the world tours, fancy cars, celebrity cocktail parties we attend, and overall high life we enjoy because of Afrolicious, (guys I'm being a little sarcastic here). But the joy of the people is really what we do this for, and of course the joy we get from rocking with you guys.
Truly blessed to be in such a wonderful city with such amazing folks from around the globe, dropping in on the weekly to dance, hug, drink, chat, smoke, dance, love, smile, dance, laugh, shake it, express style and flavor!

With these sentiments in mind it is our great honor to announce a night celebration to commemorate Afrolicious going strong for three years every single Thursday night.

EarthRise SoundSystem is the artistic and live team of DJ/writer/yogi Derek Beres and producer/percussionist Duke Mushroom. Blending Duke's Award nominated production style (Bole 2 Harlem) and Derek's expansive vision of Global Beat Fusion, this duo has paired up to explore common cultural and sonic ground and create unique soundscapes, equally at home in the yoga studio or club and lounge.

When the two ERSS members first joined together to remix a song by popular mantra singer Deva Premal, they set out to create a new paradigm as to what ‘yoga music’ meant. The result was a percussively rich, organically spacious and dubby soundscape. This approach laid the foundation for their full length album, The Yoga Sessions (Yoga Organix: January 1, 2010), a collection of 21st century electronically inspired yet organically grown original music that will redefine one’s notions of “yoga music.”

Derek Beres is one of the leading figures in international music in America, active in numerous facets of the industry, from journalist and DJ to producer and presenter. He has written five books, contributing to dozens of magazines regarding the traditional and digital realms of global music. He has also toured internationally, spinning alongside some of the most important figures in the scene today. He was a resident DJ of Kollektiv with Karsh Kale for nine months, and is one of the DJ members of the groundbreaking GlobeSonic Entertainment. He regularly DJs at Turntables on the Hudson, and has spun alongside the likes of Jamiroquai, Ojos de Brujo, Konono No 1, and many others. He is the producer of three albums, including a remix record of Malian artist Vieux Farka Toure, and a forthcoming mixed CD on Six Degrees Records.

Duke Mushroom is a platinum-selling producer, writer, and versatile musician. Duke has written and produced with artists as varied as the Baha Men, Carole King, Cooler Kids, Nile Rogers and Chic, Donna Summer, Cyndi Lauper, and Micheal Tolcher, before recording his groundbreaking foray into Global Sound, "BOLE 2 HARLEM." As one-half of the production team PopRox, he remixed tracks for Method Man, Montell Jordan, Sisqo, DMX, and Bob Marley among others. Besides being one of the original performing Cast members of Stomp!, his percussion credits include Gloria Estefan, Janet and Michael Jackson, Die Warsaw, and Cher, as well as playing on over 50 other records for the likes of Roger S, Tony Moran, Masters at Work, Static Revenger, and Erick Morillo. He has also scored several films, including “Accepted,” as well as the 2008 IDA winning documentary, “A Walk To Beautiful.” His songs and productions have been licensed in over 40 films and TV shows as well as numerous commercials.

Afrolicious is gettin' fired up to move forward with an amazing line up of top notch performers. Already this year we have featured a live cumbia band (Very Be Careful) from L.A., DJ, Concerned (formerly NYC, just relocated to SF) Percussionists' Rene Flores and Baba Juru, MC's Iggy Mon, and Krown Prince.

This coming week we are honored to welcome back to the Afrolicious scene J.Boogie and his incredible DJ skills and wonderful vibes. J.Boogie is an accomplished producer, DJ, radio persona, and all around hip cat. His remixes over the last couple years have been insane, working with the likes of Nickodemus, Vieux Farka Toure, Romanowski, DJ Zeph, and Mark Farina ( to name a few) and has collaborated with such artists as Lyrics Born, Zion I, Crown City Rockers, etc. Lookout for a new album sometime in the new year.

Also lookout in the next couple weeks as we are bringing in some deeeeeeeeep talent from the Apple. Thursday February 4th we will be featuring Greg Caz, you may know him from his incredible mixes entitled Brazilian Beats Brooklyn (Mr.Bongo Records) He has been diggin' music and records for a long long while and has a tremendous amount of knowledge and music that he has been offering to the NYC scene and world for years. This is actually his SF debut so help us give him an extra warm welcome to the bay.

The following week we are very pleased to announce Afrolicious party in conjunction with Wax Poetics, and Fania will be hosting the official Bay Area record release party for Joe Cuba’s El Alcalde Del Barrio album coming out on Fania Records. This release is scheduled for February 23, 2010 and commemorates one-year after the passing of this Latin legend. New York’s Chico Mann (Antibalas) will be performing a live set of Joe Cuba’s songs including the international hits “Bang Bang” and “El Pito (I’ll Never Go Back to Georgia),” and many other diverse numbers that spanned Cuba’s illustrious career.

So as you can see, just the next few weeks promise to offer a whole lot to the SF Mission scene provided by the Afrolicious crew!

He has shared the stage with Quantic, Bonobo, Mr. Scruff, and Nostalgia 77 to name a few. Rob also has a weekly radio show, UNFOLD

Lanu aka Lance Ferguson of The Bamboos favours Broken Beat, Hip-hop, Soul, House, Jazz and Latin rhythms as a DJ - and also incorporates the raw deep Funk sound that he produces for The Bamboos and Kylie Auldist. Has toured all across Europe and Australia, working with Mark de Clive-Lowe, Alice Russell and of course many TT artists. He recently did a nice Soul mix that was featured on Waxpoetics.com.

Tomas Palermo is a renaissance man of dj culture, holding it down as co-label head of Voltage Music, producing under the Double ID moniker, dj'ng on the regular and on KUSF's Friday Night Sessions, mad writer who was the editor at XLr8R for a long time, and all around great scholar and dj and positive social force!

Twas an amazing weekend for the Pleasuremaker Band in Southern California. We left the Bay bright and early Friday morning (11 am) and headed south to play a couple shows.
Big love to Next Aid, Dubspot, the Rhythm Section, Obah, J.Sole, J.Boogie, Glenn Red, the Simple Citizens, Derrick, and Lauren, and Dan, not to mention everyone else who was involved with putting together the Funk Aid for Africa showcase. It was a great night Friday @ the Dakota Lounge in Santa Monica. Our homey Wiseacre was also throwing a late night thing in downtown LA. but a highway misadventure kept the band from making it. Oz however was there representing Afrolcious.

Saturday we recovered by swimming in a crystal clear pool in the Hollywood hills (respect Thadius) and swung through Venice Beach to kick it w- Dan over looking the ocean on a perfect night. We headed down to Fullerton in Orange County to throw it down @ the Continental Room. The crowd and energy was straight off tha hook that night. Love to Señor Oz and Obah for holding it down between sets. The video is from our last song that night.

Much love Fullerton, was my first time in Orange County, it's funny how negatively peeps judge So Cal. I was blown away by the hospitality and appreciation for live music down that way! And feeling so blessed for our gracious hosts Nadine and Lisa who put up the band, fed us, came out to the shows to party, and just opened their hearts and their pad in Hollywood to this band of gypsies.

Gettin' super fired up about this weekend. Today is Fela Kuti's Birthday and we celebrate @ Afrolicious tonight one of the cats who is responsible for the birth of Afrolicious!!! Fela has changed up my course entirely since I first started diggin' into his sounds as well as the sounds of West Africa. Not only his music but his fire and ceaseless energy to fight against corruption and the power structure that held back his fellow citizens. Not to mention his always expanding influence on music from around the world and the future of music in general.

Tonight @ Afrolciioous we have special returning guests DJ's E's and Oneman, together they form the Midnight Lab Band off the NYC Trust label. You have heard productions from this tasty label on Thursday night's or other sets by Pleasuremaker and Señor Oz, we love these cats! Also an old homey Balagan (Baltimore) is playing early. Gonna be a sure shot throw down as the energy keeps increasing each week.

And finally this weekend finds us taking the Pleasuremaker Band on the road for a mini So.Cal tour.
Friday night we are playing w- some of our favorite people @ the Dakota Lounge in Santa Monica, The night is a special CD release for the FunkAid for Africa CD compiled by DJ Obah, and hosted by NextAid, Dubspot, and the Rhtyhm Section. It features DJ's Obah (NY) J.Boogie (OM, SF) J.Sole (Afrofunke KCRW) Glenn Red (Afrofunke) and Bands Simple Citizen (LA) and Pleasuremaker Band.

Saturday night the band will be doing two sets of live music at the Continental Room in Fullerton, CA w- DJ's Bobby Sole, Obah and Señor Oz. Very excoted to play this infamous spot, where so many of the bands we dig have been playing.

Afrolicious has been rolling strong. The guests have been off tha hook, we look forward to many more amazing guest in store throughout the rest of the funky season. We have not been so good about updating this here blog, I promise to be better about it starting today.....

First wanted to mention that we are celebrating the official release of the Pleasuremaker Band EP entitled "What We Came For." Ultimately we came to get down. The music made on this EP was done in San Francisco with some veteran players from the Bay Area scene and is a reflection of the genre bending spirit of this city. The players all came together in one room, like bands did it back in the day, and played. In the end we added in some electronic elements but this is an organic recording for the most part, with an obvious love for the old funk, and afro-beat sounds of the 70's.

What did we come for? We also came here to be more aware of the things done around the world and our own communities in the name of justice and democracy, that are sometimes pushing oppressive, destructive, and even murderous agendas. These songs were wrote during some dark days in this countries history "the Bush Years." From invading other countries, championing torture, neglecting our own suffering people during Katrina and paying no attention to poverty in general, corporate scandals, no-bid contracts, war profiteering, not to mention failed economic policy, and on top of all that this country is still bogged down in two senseless wars. This EP and band is about bringin' folks together on the dance floor and focusing on having a damn good time, while still paying attention to what is going on.
This EP is now available on-line if you are unable to attend the party Thursday October 1st @ the Elbo Room, where you will receive a CD w- the admission price.

Summmmmmertime, and I don't know that the living is easy, but it's good nonetheless....

I want to post some of the most recent music for ya'll, Afrolicious live 7-2-09, that night was insanely off tha' hook! We had 350 ish people packed up in the Elbo Room bringing a crazy amount of energy to the scene!!! I know we have been promising to keep this coming. There is so much more to come.... we truly need an intern to help manage all this insane amount of content.

I also wanted to spread the word about my man Nickodemus from the NY scene who just dropped a brand new album 'Sun People'. Just a lil' background to the man, he has been tearing things up as a DJ for awhile including but not limited to 11 years as co-host, (alongside DJ Mariano) and founder of Turntables on the Hudson, the world renowned dance party that carried on the very earliest legacy of DJ, live drums/live elements that started w- cats like DJ Smash, Nappy G. and the Groove Collective. During this period Nickodemus also developed some amazing production skills as well. Putting out tracks and remixes for compilations, eventually he debuted his solo album Endangered Species in 2005 to a worldwide audience and got picked up by the famous Eighteenth Street Lounge Label started by Thievery Corporation. Since '05 he has been globe trotting like a MOFO! In past few years he has been collaborating w- a truly eclectic and wonderful cast of musicians and vocalist and the result is his follow up album 'Sun People'. This album is bursting w- life, energy, positive vibes, and a deep and ancient quality to it. This album, like the last, can make you dance, nod your head, or sit still and close your eyes while your mind and spirit travels the globe like my man has been doing for a lil' while now! On top of being a dope producer, DJ, and thrower of parties, Nickodemus is an all around great fella to be around, he exudes that positive energy and keeps a smile on his face as well as those around him. Cheers to Nickodemus and the whole Turntables on the Hudson crew.
We will be hosting a Album release party for the man July 24th @ the Paradise Lounge with our friend DJ Smash as well. Gonna be a great night indeed!

Bomba Estéreo Release 'Blow Up' is Bangin'!

Oz and I just listened to Blow Up by Bomba Estéreo released by our friends at Nacional Records, gracis para the jams! As I listen each cut takes my ears into a new dimension of soundz. These beats and songs can be played along side some classic cumbia joint, an Afrobeat track or even a electro-Balkan banger. Digging deeply into the Afro-Latin riddims and melodies of Colombia and the Carribean Bomba are listening to all kinds of music and their heavy layers express those wandering ears. Their choice of instrumentation and layering or electro-beats and warm analog instrumentation create a warm bed for the amazing instrumental playing and fierce vocals to ride on and create a beautiful picture in the mind, and bangin' dancefloor in the spot. Paying homage to a rich musical heritage and freely throwing down hip-hop breaks and synth-layers this band is bridging the Ancient to the Future!

*This week we are very honored to be celebrating the release of a very special mix CD 'Funk Aid For Africa' mixed and compiled by our friend DJ Oba from NY working with Dubspot and Nextaid, two amazing organizations you should check out!'Funk Aid for Africa' features some of today's funkiest bands and flows together in a seamless mix that keeps the listener drawn in all along the way, with heavy hitters like J.Boogie, Ocote Soul Sounds, Nappy G., Chico Mann, Pimps of Joytime, as well a Pleasuremaker cut in there the proceeds will benefit orphaned children in Africa who have lost parents due to Aids. This is a great opportunity to turn some tragic into something positive.

Feeling good, the tropical weather and the vibes on the streets of San Francisco, people are out and everyone is feeling loose.
After almost two years of throwing down @ the Elbo Room every Thursday we are going to throw ourselves and you all a celebration to commemorate 2 bangin' years of the Afrolicious party. The party has been growing steady from day one, but from the 1 year anniversary last May, (which was off tha' hook, more on that later) to present things have been getting increasingly hotter. We have had some briliant special guests, DJ's and musicians, as well as bands, from SF/Bay Area, and around the world.
We are pleased to be bringing the hosts of one of the livest parties in New York for over the last ten Years, Nickodemus and Nappy G. have been bringing the heavy beats and positive party vibes as well as DJ/Drummer combination to NYC and around the world for a long while as the founders of Turntables on the Hudson, which if you have not been to that party check it out. They not only bring heat in the live/party scene each one is a very talented producer and Nickodemus also founded Wonderwheel Records which you have heard many of these releases on Thursday nights over the last couple years! These cats have been a major inspiration to what we have been doing and it is a great honor and very fitting to have them come out and help us throw it down for this celebration.
We are also very honored to have DJ Smash as part of this celebration who was one of the earliest cats in the NY scene a ways back to bring in the live musicians to the DJ scene back in the founding days of Giant Step. As a DJ and producer Smash has been around the globe and worked with some of the biggest names in the game. A truly beautiful blend of organic and electronic is a trademark to Smash's tasty arsenal. Smash, Nickodemus and Nappy G. are founders in the New York scene for what we have been carrying on here in San Francisco. We are more than thrilled to have these fine gents out to help bring maximum heat to this party.
I also would like to mention that Chris Nicholson will be coming through from Atlanta where he has been helping to make it hot. He will be joining the celebration the second night as the festivities carry on w- a live set by the Pleasuremaker band. As I said before last year was off tha' hook. We featured Spam All-Stars from Miami each night and Pleasuremaker band joined for the Friday show as well. The Elbo Room was slamming each night, but Friday was insane, you could barely get across the joint at the height of the party, but the spirits were high the whole time, so we aim to bring the same positivity to the this celebration.
Thanks to B.Lee and J.Elrod for holding down drums and percussion each and every week, Pleasuremaker and Señor Oz also give huge love to every single one of you who has come out and danced, had a great time, brought your vibes and spread the love.
We are so blessed it is ridiculous, I mean that in a very good way :-) We hope to keep this party going for many years to come. I still am promising to post up some of the recent shows, things have been crazy lately ya'll, but I also mean that in a good way too:-)

Even though it was early it was still busy and the tempos were up, Oz starting out with some disco re-edits of Gil Scot-Heron and the Million Dollar edit and some Blaze (check out the abrupt ending on that one and the live percussion recovery. this ain't rehearsed! thats where the improv comes in) and you can hear it in the recording, all the players are pushing the dancers and the dancers energy is pushing back. By the time Pleasuremaker drops the next track, mixing live from the drums its all over, and its all live as hell.

What a mad night of music, energy, dance and community it was last week at Afrolicious! There was much cause for celebration because we had a birthday guest,DJ, Master of Ceremonies, Master Percussionist, Jedi Master and brother from another mother Nappy G returned to the Afrolicious party.

Since his last time at the party Nappy has been a busy man, doing tours of Europe as a dj and sideman with some other amazing bands and djs, and holding steady in the NYC.

Nappy also put out an album last fall featuring remixes from producers around the planet, including Pleasuremaker, who laid down some Afro-psych guitar over the ultra percussive cut Habanaba.

More and more family came out throughout the night including MCs Soulati and Lex from Raw Deluxe, DJ Smash, Izzy, and of course all-night long on percussion B Lee and drumming from Elrod (check the all live drum intro on the recording at top!)

Ok, just want to say that the cup of life has been full. Been busy rockin' parties with YOU, laying down a studio session @ Sound Arts with our homies over there. Been producing it with the help of engineer and friend Ryan Kleeman, into what will be the Pleasuremaker band debut EP, tentatively titled '09 EP vol. 1 as we are looking to put out much more music in the still young year. Been also nursing myself back to health as many of the folks I know have also been battling this long-term cold thing that just aint too cool.
Well let's get down to the inspirational side. As for Afrolicious we have had some incredible guest and just as importantly amazing vibes from you all week in and week out. Last week we had Jeremy Sole come up from Los Angeles where he host a weekly party called Afrofunké. It was great having that cat and his amazing energy and killer set of music. The week before that we had Chief Boima from Africa, bringing the very deep and tribal soundz to the party. Also in January we had DJ Tom Thump from SF and part of Loose Joints, Yacouba Diarra and Fato Foli, DJ Nomada from Austria bringin' a heavy Balkan flavour and DJ Proof (SF) part of the Massive Selectors crew throwing down a very tasty set.
January was a killer month of guests at Afrolicious and other parties rocked at such spots as Make Out Room, Boom Boom Room, Cafe Du Nord w- Boca Do Rio, Annie's Social Club with Toph One and DJ Zjelcko as well as a couple more at Mojitos!
We have been taking hand held recordings at the shows and will be posting more of those up soon to come! I just got done putting last week's Afrolicious into sets (at top of post), enjoy!

So looking forward to Afrolicious tonight with our good friend and amazing DJ,musician, MC, and producer, Nappy G. as well as tomorrow night @ Amnesia for the Global Village get down. We all rocked together last night @ Rickshaw stop w-the good people from Partycorps for the Funkraiser II party and it was a blast. Big ups to Be Brown, Señor Oz, the full Pleasuremaker band and Nappy G.! The proceeds from last night's event are helping the Rehabilitation Initiative 2009 which will send two physical therapists to spend a year training local Democratic Republic of Congo healthcare providers in addressing these vast rehabilitation needs. I'm an '80's hater! I hate Reagan, cocaine, Ray-Bans, Miami Vice, and I hate the current '80's revival even more (stop wearing neon, you will regret it!) But lately I've been trying to find the gems that are timeless and genre-bending. Strut records (thanks K7 for bringing them back) has pretty much done the job for me with this compilation of tracks recorded at Chris Blackwell's Compass Point studio in the Bahamas. Every track is a standout, all feature Sly and Robbie on drums and bass, there are a few tracks you know (Tom Tom Club) but the ones you don't (Guy Cuevas) are just as fresh!

This compilation I want to draw attention to today is strictly off the hook and soulful as can be! I just picked this gem up a few days ago and I'm still beginning to digest how heavy and beautiful it is. Heavy afro-grooves, and rhythms from the Afro-Carribean lay the foundation for this compilation that does not restrict itself to Calpso or Trinidad. The straight calypso stuff is fire, really tasty percussion and typically a fair amount of horns. You can hear the carnival celebration that this music derives from in the sound, you also can get a sense of rebellion that exist in such a heavily colonized region on the world.
Without a doubt the radio waves from New Orleans and Florida must have been getting picked up throughout the Carribean as demonstrated in songs like St. Maarten's The Rolling Tones "It's a Feeling" there is a driving funk/disco back drop for the more Afro-Carribean horns and vocals on top, that joint is funky as hell. Also included is some Afro-Cuban stuff on there like Juan Formell Y Los Van Van, as well as this scorching remake of one of my favorite latin-dance floor bangers originally entitled "Anabacoa"
Martinique pianist and band leader Marius Cultier provides a smoker called Guanavaco.
One stand out cut outside of the Calypso genre is Cedric Im Brooks Blackness of Darkness who is one of my favorite Jamaican musicians. The main word in this comp is soul, as everything on here is undeniably soulful. I have been in listening bliss throughout the last weekend and as I write this keeping Calpysoul 70 on constant rotation.
Big ups to Strut for continuing to bring serious heat to a struggling music industry. Keep the quality music and compilations coming please!

With Barack Obama winning the election the time is ripe for a positive new direction in this country and world. This feeling has been in the air, things are happening and walls of hate and oppression are slowly crumbling, we continue to break those walls down every Thursday night at the Elbo Room with the Afrolicious party, thanks to all the soulful people making it happen on the dance floor and stage every week. Big ups to my man Hajj from Gambia for getting on the mic Thursday the 6th of November and expounding on the significance of the Obama victory (check the show!)and last Thursday our great friend DJ Concerned from Brooklyn for spinning a fiery set. (That show soon to be posted....)

With the economic and political climate in such a ugly situation it becomes even more vital to come together with the people and release some positive energy on the dance floor and through the exchange we share in music and culture. The previous few weeks at Elbo Room on Thursday night, or Rickshaw this last Wednesday have been a great testament to this. We are so blessed to continue to get amazing people from all walks of life to come out to these parties and celebrate life together. As a gift in return of all this positive energy we would like to share the live sets with you. We also would love to include some pics from the parties as well so you can be reminded of what a killer time we all had, or if you were not able to be there you can still peep what good times went down :-)
The next couple weeks promise to be ugly in the political arena but we promise to offer more inclusiveness and togetherness, and positivity, because while those in power waking up early every morning to wreck people's lives, racially divide, and sour the earth with their corrupt ways, we stay up late each night working to mend the damage and heal the pain baby! Afrolicious carries on! We like to give a special shout out to the incredible guest artist we had out last Thursday the 23rd of October, from LA Quetzal Guerrero and the warriors on Yoruba records, bringin' a special brew of Latin/Brazilian soul, they played a nice set and joined us for some jamming later in the evening. As always a big shout out to B.Lee and Joel Elrod on percussion and drums respectively. We also had some vocal help from Senagalese singer and talking drum player Samba, as well as some vocal hyping and beautiful stage energy from our man Yacouba from Mali! So great to have some African musicians grace the stage @ Afrolicious and pay homage to the motherland!
With that in mind I also want to mention a Fela tribute party brought to you by my friends Jeremiah and Sila Saturday the 25th of Oct. @ the Independent in San Francisco.

The passing of a Legend

I'm so sad to say so long to Alton Ellis whose beautiful voice and vibe brought so much soul and joy to my life. As a lover of Jamaican music and Soul/Funk, Ellis was right @ the heart of this crossroads. He was considered the godfather of Rocksteady, which was kind of the bride between ska and reggae and was part of the fiercest label in the history of Jamaica, Studio One. He will be missed.

Want to spread the word about this track that has been blowing up my headphones, home stereo, dj sets, and has been in my mind constantly. "AfrObama" by Cody ChesnuTT is a stripped down afro-beat track that is raw, soulful, deep, and hopeful, full of suffering and reminiscent of early blues from back in the time of out right segregation, (unlike today's cloaked segregation.) This song gave me goosebumps the first time I heard it during a set by DJ Sabo in NY, and as I listen to it and write this post I am filled w- hope and dreams of a brighter day in the near future. I know that is expecting a tremendous amount from one politician in such a broke and corrupt political system that will try to crush any one that wishes to shift the paradigm that has existed in this country for so long, but Obama has something truly rare in him and we need someone to believe in so much, as does the rest of the world that feels the brunt of our tragic foreign policy and neo-imperialist ways. Dig that song, spread the word to your family members or colleagues who may be undecided and let us pray that something better is on the horizon.
Big ups to DJ's Sabo (NYC), Dunklebunt (Vienna), and the band Pangea Collective (LA) for the great support and guest appearances the last couple of weeks! Last Thursday DJs E'sE and Oneman from the Brooklyn label Names You Can Trust (www.nyctrust.com) stopped by to spin a set and promote the new 12" on the label from the Midnight Lab Band. Afrolicious is a weekly Thursday night party (not a show!) at Elbo Room in San Francisco.
It was started by dj/producers Pleasuremaker & Señor Oz in 2007!
Exploring the sounds of the Africa diaspora, from Mali to Memphis. Every week the show features djs/producers/live musicians from near and far collaborating to move the dancefloor.
We have been looking for a steady web presence since we started the party over a year ago. This blog will host some pictures, music, ephemera for the rest of the world to check! Also hit us with any comments , links , etc.
